Exercising – Music

“Where words fail, music speaks” – Hans Christian Anderson

In general, It would be truthful to say that music has a strong influence on me.  Put on The Lord of the Rings soundtrack and my mind goes flying along the lands of Middle Earth, ready to battle Orcs, go on a journey, or just enjoy a day in the Shire. When Mozart, Vivaldi, or Bach play, I want a hot tub, a glass of wine, and otherwise total silence. Cajun music starts up and I’m ready for a cookout and time with family. Gregorian chant allows my brain to shut out the noise of life, so I listen to it while praying or trying to fall asleep. Rock from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s makes me want to clean or garden. But when hard rock/metal comes on, that’s my signal to exercise!

It’s a double catharsis: both my mind and my body run hard and at the end, I’m drained. But in a good way. It’s a natural high, one I welcome with open arms. So I’m going to share my play list here. I had two requirements for each song:

1) I had to be able to comfortably jog or spar to the rhythm (some are slower, some quicker, making for great interval training).

2) The words had to mean something to me.

Since an occasional vulgar word isn’t going to deter me from listening to a song, some of these are explicit. You have been warned (though you could always get the radio edit). It’s a rather long list and I keep adding to it as I find songs that fit. Here they are, in no particular order:
